A mantra (Pali: manta) or mantram (मन्त्रम्) is a sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word or phenomena, or group of words in Sanskrit and Pali and other languages believed by practitioners to have religious, magical or spiritual powers. Mostly mantras have a syntactic structure and literal meaning, while others do not. Mantras are repeated silently or aloud for their powerful sound vibrations, which are thought to affect prana (life-force energy) in the body, and for their ability to transform or achieve a purpose.
